Dental Implants Fill In Your Smile's Gaps

Dental Implants If injuries or decay have created gaps in your smile, you can fill them in with dental implants.

It's estimated that 70% of middle-aged Americans are missing at least one tooth from their full set. With a statistic like that, it may seem totally normal to have an empty space or two in your mouth. Unfortunately, in this case, the majority doesn't rule. In fact, even one missing tooth can have a domino effect, creating an uncomfortable environment that may lead to more loss. To combat this problem, the Hilton Head Dental Team is pleased to offer dental implants to their patients.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are divided into three sections. The post is the first portion. Made of titanium, a durable and lightweight metal, these resemble tiny screws. A brief in-office surgical procedure places the post under the gum line. Most patients report that this surgery feels similar to having a cavity filled. While the initial healing process only takes a few days, it will be several months before the post has fused with the bone surrounding it. At this point, an abutment will be installed on top of the post. This small, but important piece of the implant securely fastens the topmost portion - the crown. This piece, uniquely fabricated in a laboratory, has both form and function - it looks and operates just like a natural tooth, aiding in chewing, talking and support for the teeth next to it.

Durability and convenience

As your Hilton Head Dentist will tell you, dental implants are especially favored because of they are long-lasting and stable. Unlike conventional dentures, which must be held in place with adhesive and removed for cleaning and sleeping, implants are low-maintenance. They can be cared for in the same way as your natural teeth with regular brushing, flossing, and checkups with one of the dentists at our practice. Appropriate maintenance means that dental implants can last a lifetime.
