Benjamin Thomas Wietecha, DMD

Owner · General Dentist
Dr. Benjamin Wietecha grew up in Columbia, South Carolina, in a close-knit family where most of his relatives still live today. His mother spent her career in early education, and his father is an oral surgeon. Growing up around dentistry from a young age gave him an appreciation for working with his hands and a love for science-based problem solving. Childhood evenings at home included slide presentations of maxillofacial pathology, trips to the office to see emergency patients, and playing with dental wax and modeling stone — perhaps not everyone's idea of bliss, but for him it was the start of a lifelong fit.
Family Roots
Dr. Wietecha has two older sisters. One became a physical therapist, and the other works for a medical supply company. Both are married, and Dr. Wietecha is uncle to three nephews and two nieces. Family has always been a central part of his life.
Education and Training
Dr. Wietecha earned his B.S. in Biology from Furman University in 2005. He then began a second degree in Biomedical Engineering at the University of South Carolina, but was accepted into the College of Dental Medicine at MUSC before completing it.
After dental school, he pursued a General Practice Residency based at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital in Columbia. His time at Richland focused on advanced techniques in general dentistry — including management of medically compromised patients, complex extractions, reconstructive techniques, dental implant placement, and parenteral sedation.
Why Dentistry
Dr. Wietecha chose a career in dentistry because health care provides him with a way to help others. While studying at USC and during his time at MUSC, he volunteered at a free medical and dental clinic for the underserved. That experience opened his eyes to the gift dentistry can be for patients who need it most.
He sees the field as a thoughtful blend of biology, engineering, and close personal interaction, and he finds all three rewarding.
Outside the Office
Outside of dentistry, Dr. Wietecha enjoys time with family and friends, health and fitness, hiking, camping, and automobiles. He has enjoyed becoming part of the Hilton Head community.
